Verb + …ing
Rule-1 (e)
If there is single ‘e’ at the end of the verb, it is removed and then ‘ing’ is applied.
- come = coming
- advise = advising
- praise = praising
- shine = shining
Rule-2 (ee)
But it here are double ‘ee’ at the end of the verb, they remain there, no removal and direct ‘ing’ is applied.
- agree = agreeing
- knee = kneeing
- see = seeing
Rule-3 (ie/ye)
If there is ‘ie’ at the end of the verb, it is converted into ‘y’ and then ‘ing’ is applied.
- die = dying
- tie = tying
But ‘ye’ remains unchanged and ‘ing’ is applied
dye = dyeing
And sometimes ‘ge’ remains unchanged and ‘ing’ is applied
age = ageing
Rule-4 (doubling)
If the verb ends with Single vowel + single consonant, the ending consonant is doubled and then ‘ing’ is applied.
- plan = planning
- bet = betting
- submit = submitting
- stop = stopping
- hug = hugging
Rule-5 (w-x-y)
But these three consonants are never doubled while applying ‘ing’.
- show = showing
- mix = mixing
- play = playing
Rule-6 (no doubling)
And if the last consonant is unstressed, it is also not doubles though there is vowel before it.
- visit = visiting
- happen = happening
